Abia lawmaker arraigned in court, granted N500,000 bail for assaulting Bolt driver

Nigeria Police Force Special Investigation Unit and the Legal Section have on Wednesday, prosecuted the member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency (APGA), Alexander Ikwechegh on the charges of “Abuse of Office, Criminal Intimidation and Criminal Force and Assault” at the Kuje Magistrate Court.
The Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi made this known in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday.
Adejobi stated that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered a proper investigation into the matter to ensure that justice is served and promote human respect and dignity in Nigeria.
He wrote, “In response to a case of assault on a bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, by Hon. Alexander Ikwechegh, on the night of October 27 2024, the Nigeria Police Force Special Investigation Unit and the Legal Section have concluded investigations into the case and today arraigned Hon. Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh on the charges of ‘Abuse of Office, Criminal Intimidation and Criminal Force and Assault Contrary to Sections 397(b) and 265 of the Penal Code Act at the Kuje Magistrate Court.
“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., had ordered a proper investigation into the matter to ensure that justice is served and promoting human respect and dignity in Nigeria.
“The IGP hereby reaffirms the Force’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, reassuring members of the public that the Force remains dedicated towards ensuring all fundamental steps are taken towards assuring justice always as no one is above the law.”
However, Dailyeconomy gathered that the court granted a N500,000 bail to the lawmaker after pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges filed by the police.
Dailyeconomy learnt that Ikwechegh’s counsel made an oral application for his bail, of which the court later granted the application with the bail sum set at N500,000 and two sureties in like sum.
The sureties according to a report must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and provide utility bills as proof of residence.
The case therefore was adjourned to November 8, 2024.
Dailyeconomy had earlier reported that Ikwechegh trended for physically and verbally assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, whom he accused of disrespect for asking him to approach the car to receive his package.
