Again, CBN denies revoking banks’ licences

Abdullateef Fowewe

The Central Bank of Nigeria has again denied withdrawing Unity Bank and Keystone Banks’ licences.

Early today, a memo containing the CBN’s logo circulated online saying the apex bank of Nigeria has withdrawn the licence of the aforementioned banks.

The memo which advised the customers of the Unity Bank, Keystone and Heritage Bank to withdraw all their money from the banks immediately was declared fake by CBN on their X (formally Twitter) handle on Wednesday.

Reacting to the memo, the CBN posted the memo as a picture and stamped it ‘FAKE DOCUCUMENT, NOT FROM US’, with a caption, “This is intended to mislead the general public. It has nothing to do with the Central Bank of Nigeria. Please be guided.”

The CBN on June 4, denied plans to revoke the licenses of Unity Bank, Polaris Bank, and Keystone Bank. This was after it had revoked the licence of Heritage Bank.
