On a year-on -year basis, the average air fare paid by passengers rose by 25.12% in July 2023,
The National Bureau of Statistics disclosed this in its report on Transport Fare Watch July 2024, obtained by Dailyeconomy.
‘In air travel, the average fare paid by air passengers for specified routes single journey was N98,561.74 in July 2024, showing an increase of 9.65% while compared to previous month (June 2024). On a year-on -year basis, the fare rose by 25.12% from N78,775.74 in July 2023,” it stated.
According to the report, the transport Fare Watch for July 2024 covers the following categories: bus journey within the city per drop constant route; bus journey intercity (state route) charge per person; air fare charge for specified routes single journey; journey by motor- cycle (Okada) per drop; and water way passenger transport.
The average price fare paid by commuters for bus journeys within the city per drop decreased to 2.18% from N963.58 in June 2024 to N942.61 in July 2024. On a year-on year basis, it declined by 29.46% from N1,336.29 in July 2023.
In another category, the average fare paid by commuters for bus journey intercity per drop was N7,117.17 in July 2024, indicating an increase of 0.35% on a month-on-month basis compared to N7,092.03 in June 2024. On a year-on-year ba- sis, the fare rose by 20.23% from N5,919.49 in July 2023.
The average transport fare paid on Okada transportation was N483.33 in July 2024 which shows an increase of 1.22% when compared with the value recorded in June 2024 (N477.49). On a year-on-year basis, the fare decreased by 25.20% when compared with July 2023 (N646.12).
For water transport (waterway passenger transportation), the average fare paid in July 2024 was N1,403.06 which indi- cates a decline of 0.44% on monthly basis. On a year-on-year basis, it decreased by 0.26% from N1,406.70 in July 2023.
On state profile analysis, for intercity bus travel (state route charged per person fare), the highest fare was recorded in Anambra with N9,566.89, followed by Gombe with N8,299.44. The least fare was recorded in Kwara with N5,518.38, fol- lowed by Ebonyi with N5,596.11. Taraba state recorded the highest bus journey within the city (per drop constant route) in July 2024 with N1,457.28 followed by Ondo with N1,200.94. On the other hand, Adamawa recorded the least with N500.00, followed by Abia with N505.35. Similarly, Benue recorded the highest air transport charges (for specified routes single journeys) with N105,505.26, followed by Edo with N105,171.71. Conversely, Jigawa recorded the least fare with N87,493.89, followed by Cross River with N90,049.44. Also, Lagos State had the highest motorcycle transport fare in July 2024 with N856.94, followed by Ondo with N707.83. Bayelsa recorded the least fare with N293.33, followed by Anambra with N294.04. Similarly, water transport fare was highest in Bayelsa with N4,569.74, followed by Delta with N4,223.66, while the least fare was recorded in Borno with N456.92, followed by Gombe with N566.89.
For Analysis by zone in July 2024, transport fares of bus journeys within the city recorded the highest in the South-West with N976.70, followed by the South-South with N965.75, while the South-East recorded the least with N901.26.
In terms of bus journey intercity, the South-South had the highest fare with N7,637.14 followed by the South-East with N7,319.64, while North-Central recorded the least with N6,812.11.
Air transportation in July 2024, the North-Central recorded the highest fare with N102,139.71, followed by the North- East with N101,141.22. while the North-West had the least with N96,352.82.
Also, commuters on a motorcycle (Okada) paid the highest fare in the South-West with N544.27 and North-East with N512.77, while the North-West recorded the least with N435.99.
The South -South zone had the highest fare on water transport with N3,572.94, followed by the South-West with N1,3561.34, while the North-East had the least with N779.04.
