Senate President Godswill Akpabio has publicly attributed his rise in Nigerian politics to divine intervention, describing his journey as a testament to “God’s favour.”

Speaking at the commissioning of Regina Coeli Parish Rectory in Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio emphasised the spiritual foundation of his achievements.

In his address, he remarked, “I didn’t get here by my power. God lifted me.” Highlighting his unique position in government, he noted, “I am the highest-ranking Christian in government,” pointing out that President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima are Muslims.

Akpabio encouraged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their faith despite the country’s ongoing economic challenges, urging resilience amid difficulties.

The statement elicited mixed reactions—while some questioned the timing and relevance given the economic hardship, others saw it as a sincere expression of gratitude within a religious context.

Church leaders and parishioners described the event as an inspiration to the Christian community, underscoring the importance of faith in public life.
