In his 2025 Christmas message, the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, urged Nigerians not to succumb to fear and despair, emphasizing hope, love, and national renewal during the festive season.

The message was released through the Director of Social Communications, Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu.

Archbishop Martins acknowledged the challenges facing the nation, including criminal violence and pervasive insecurity, describing the current climate as a “tide of fear and despair” affecting many citizens. Despite these difficulties, he called on Nigerians to place their hope in God, who alone provides hope that never disappoints.

The Archbishop also stressed the responsibility of government officials and politicians to act courageously and meaningfully, rather than relying on empty promises. “We must challenge our leaders to urgently end kidnappings and killings and secure our farms, roads, schools, and places of worship,” he said.

While recognizing government efforts, Archbishop Martins lamented that many Nigerians still struggle to dream with confidence due to insecurity. He urged citizens to embody Christ’s love, empathy, and kindness, particularly towards the vulnerable, describing the essence of Christmas as selflessness, justice, humility, and love.

Concluding his message, the Archbishop outlined a vision for national renewal. “The transformation we long for will come if we love God, love our neighbors, uphold the rule of law, and live at peace with one another, regardless of religion, tribe, or political affiliation,” he said. “Let this Christmas be a turning point. Let us build bridges, not walls, and shine the light of Christ through our actions.”
