Diego Simeone etched his name into Atlético Madrid folklore on Wednesday, securing his first-ever managerial victory at Spotify Camp Nou with a 2-0 Champions League quarter-final triumph over FC Barcelona.
The milestone win – Simeone’s 19th visit to the stadium – shattered Barcelona’s 25-game unbeaten home streak against Atlético dating back to 2006.
Julián Álvarez fired Atlético ahead with a brilliant 45th-minute strike just after Pau Cubarsí’s red card in the 44th minute left Barcelona down to 10 men.
Alexander Sørloth added a second in the 70th minute, heading home to seal a vital advantage for the April 14/15 return leg at the Metropolitano.
Barcelona, stunned after their 2-1 La Liga win over Atlético on April 4, now regroup ahead of Saturday’s clash with Espanyol.
