Delta State Police Command’s spokesperson, Edafe Bright, has said that anyone who attempts suicide risks a year jail term.
Bright revealed this in a post on X (formally Twitter) on Tuesday.
After the police report, where it was mentioned that the Abuja man who tried to commit suicide by climbing a very tall mast may face charges in court if he is found to be mentally stable. Many wonder why they would choose to prosecute him instead of providing assistance after rescuing him.
Reacting to the people’s opinion, Bright said in a post, “So online judges were asking why the man who attempted suicide in Abuja was arrested and not rescued. Well the law does not have a place for pity or emotions, the law is clear, suicide itself is not an offence, but attempted suicide is an offence that attracts one year of Imprisonment if found guilty. We are not the ones who make the law, we only enforce it. SEC 327CC.”
Dailyeconomy reported on Monday that Abuja Police Command arrested a man identified as Shuaibu Yushau who climbed an extremely high broadcast mast owned by Aso Radio in Katampe, Abuja, with a placard to commit suicide.
