Tottenham Hotspur have dismissed head coach Ange Postecoglou just 16 days after he led the club to a historic 1-0 Europa League final victory over Manchester United, ending a 17-year trophy drought and securing Champions League qualification.
Postecoglou’s tenure was marked by a stark contrast between European success and Premier League struggles, as Spurs finished 17th—their lowest-ever Premier League position—with 22 defeats and only 38 points.
Despite fulfilling his promise to win a trophy in his second season, the club’s poor league form and tactical inflexibility led chairman Daniel Levy to make the decision to part ways with the Australian manager halfway through his four-year contract.
Postecoglou’s departure means Spurs will seek their fifth permanent manager in six years, with candidates reportedly including Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Fulham’s Marco Silva.
The sacking is expected to cost Levy around £4 million in compensation, on top of bonuses already paid for the Europa League success.
This decision underscores Tottenham’s focus on Premier League performance over European glory as they aim to rebuild and climb back into the top tier of English football.
