Chelsea has parted company with head coach Enzo Maresca despite his recent European and global success, the club confirmed in a statement published on its official website on Thursday.
“Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company,” the statement read, bringing an end to the Italian’s tenure at Stamford Bridge after 92 matches in charge.
During his spell in west London, Maresca delivered silverware on two major fronts.
As the club noted, “During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club.”
However, with the season entering a decisive phase and Chelsea still involved on multiple fronts, the hierarchy opted for a change in the dugout.
Citing the need to revive their campaign, the club added, “With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.”
Maresca leaves having overseen 92 matches, recording 55 wins and lifting 2 trophies, including the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup.
The club concluded its statement by saying, “We wish Enzo well for the future.”
