Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has sensationally revealed that the club was prepared to let him leave during the last summer transfer window amid heavy interest from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.
Speaking to Portuguese outlet MaisFutebol, Fernandes said conversations with senior figures at Old Trafford left him convinced that his exit was on the table, even if no formal decision was ultimately taken.
“The club wanted me to go, I have that in my head. I told the directors this, but I think they didn’t dare to make that decision,” he said.
Al Hilal were reportedly ready to hand the Portugal international a lucrative contract, but Fernandes insists he chose to stay at United for reasons that went beyond money.
He pointed to his family, his bond with the club, and his loyalty to head coach Ruben Amorim as decisive factors.
“I decided to stay also because of family reasons, but because I genuinely like the club. The conversation with the manager also made me stay,” Fernandes added.
The midfielder admitted that the episode left him emotionally bruised, stressing that he has always given everything on the pitch for United, even when he felt that others around him were not matching his level of commitment.
Despite the club’s struggles this season, Fernandes has remained one of United’s standout performers, leading the team in both goals and assists and continuing to be a central figure in their attempts to revive their campaign.
