COAS orders overhaul of troops training, pushes for better welfare

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General W. Shaibu has directed major reforms in training, intelligence capabilities, and troops’ welfare to build a “more professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient” Nigerian Army.
The announcements capped the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2025 at Nebo Hall, Abalti Barracks.
In his remarks on Thursday, the COAS unveiled a “comprehensive overhaul of the Nigerian Army’s training, operational and administrative frameworks.”
The Nigerian Army shared the directive on X, emphasising transformation efforts amid ongoing security challenges.
Lieutenant General Shaibu highlighted the conference’s role, stating it provided a “critical platform for an in-depth assessment of the Nigerian Army’s operational and administrative performance in 2025.”
He added that “deliberations at the conference would shape policies and actions for the coming year,” signaling proactive steps to enhance readiness.
The reforms target key areas: Training reforms to sharpen skills and adaptability, intelligence upgrade for better threat detection and troops’ welfare enhancement to boost morale and retention.
