Congo is asking Nigeria to support its candidate for the position of Director-General of UNESCO.

During his visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, Congolese Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso made the request for Firmin Edouard Matoko.

He emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to enhancing its relationship with Congo and commended President Denis Sassou-Nguesso for his efforts in fostering stability in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

“President Sassou-Nguesso is one of the greatest stabilisers on the African continent,” Shettima said, adding that Congo’s request would be conveyed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Makosso described Matoko as a seasoned diplomat with over 30 years of experience at UNESCO, including roles as Assistant Director-General and head of multiple regional offices.

The Congolese delegation also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian government and the Rochas Foundation for providing free education to Congolese orphans.
