Dangote Refinery halts petrol sales in Naira, sparking market fears

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a suspension of petrol sales in naira, effective Sunday, September 28, 2025, citing the depletion of its crude-for-naira allocation.
The move has unsettled fuel marketers and raised concerns about potential pressure on pump prices and the foreign exchange market.
In an email to customers sent on Friday evening, the refinery stated, “Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been selling petroleum products in excess of our Naira-Crude allocations and, consequently, we are unable to sustain PMS sales in Naira going forward.”
Customers with pending naira transactions were advised to request refunds, with the statement adding, “This suspension of Naira sales for PMS will be effective from Sunday, 28th of September, 2025.”
This suspension marks a repeat of the refinery’s March 2025 halt of naira-based sales, which caused alarm over the dollarisation of fuel transactions and drove petrol prices near ₦1,000 per litre.
The refinery assured that “further updates regarding the resumption of supply” will be provided once the situation is resolved.
