The Delta State Government has issued a strong condemnation of the harassment and assault of women during the recent Ozoro Festival, labeling the incidents as “barbaric and unacceptable.”
In a statement released on Friday, State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, expressed deep disturbance over reports of women being targeted under the guise of festival activities.
“The Delta State Government has strongly condemned the reported harassment and assault of women during the recent Ozoro Festival,” the statement read.
Aniagwu highlighted the government’s firm stance against such violations, stressing that cultural events must not serve as a pretext for crime.
“The Delta State Government strongly condemns the harassment of ladies and the reported cases of rape during the Ozoro Festival. Such barbaric acts are totally unacceptable and have no place in our society,” he stated.
The commissioner urged security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police, to act swiftly.
“We call on security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, to urgently investigate the incidents and ensure that those responsible are identified, apprehended, and prosecuted,” Aniagwu added.
The government emphasised its commitment to protecting women’s dignity and rights amid ongoing concerns over festival-related violence.
