A massive diesel tanker overturned on Liverpool Bridge heading toward Mile 2 on Monday, causing a significant fuel spill that coated the bridge and the road below, according to Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

In an statement released Monday, Wahab detailed the incident, “A tanker loaded with diesel fell on top of Liverpool Bridge inward Mile 2. The tanker sustained damage, leading to the spillage of diesel across the bridge and on the road beneath.”

Wahab noted that the crash prompted an immediate response from emergency teams.

Wahab confirmed that the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, along with other agencies, swiftly arrived at the scene and contained the spill to prevent further escalation, such as fire or wider environmental contamination.

Emphasising the dangers, the commissioner urged residents to stay away.

“We urge members of the public to exercise restraint, caution, and civic responsibility. Approaching the scene, attempting to scoop fuel, or obstructing emergency operations puts lives at serious risk. Public safety must come first,” he added.

Such warnings are common in Lagos, where fuel spills often attract crowds hoping to collect free product, sometimes leading to explosions or traffic chaos. Liverpool Bridge, a key artery in the bustling Amuwo-Odofin area connecting to Mile 2’s markets and bus terminals, has seen similar incidents amid heavy truck traffic.

Wahab assured the public that state agencies remain on site.

“Our agencies will continue to manage the situation and ensure the area is secured. Cooperation from residents and road users is critical at this time,” he added.

Traffic disruptions are expected, with diversions likely in place.

Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes via the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway or Badagry Expressway.

No injuries have been reported so far, and environmental teams are monitoring for waterway pollution risks near nearby canals.
