The Department of State Services (DSS) has formally demanded that Meta (Facebook) immediately deactivate Omoyele Sowore’s Facebook account following a post perceived to disparage President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The DSS letter accused Sowore of spreading “misleading information” and engaging in “hate speech” that threatens Nigeria’s national security.
In the letter addressed to Meta’s CEO, the DSS cited Sowore’s August 26 statement:
“This criminal @ official ABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”
The DSS described the statement as “defamatory,” claiming it has caused “political tension and threatening the country’s national security.”
They also warned that Sowore’s post violates multiple Nigerian laws, including the Criminal Code Act, the Cyber Crimes Act 2025, and the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022, which prohibit spreading false information and incitement.
The DSS letter urged Meta to “as a matter of its own policy, immediately TAKE DOWN the post and its attendant shares,” giving the social media company 24 hours to act or face consequences from the Nigerian government.
In response, Omoyele Sowore condemned the DSS action in a post shared on Monday via his Facebook handle noting, “Lawless @OfficialDSSNG, too idle and incompetent to secure Nigeria, where over 130 citizens were killed just yesterday, has now written to @facebook, begging them to delete content they find ‘offensive’ to their equally idle, tired, and criminal Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT.”
He challenged Nigerians, asking, “how long do you want to continue being held hostage by a tiny, wicked, inhumane band of rogues? #RevolutionNow.”
