The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed strong outrage over “unfounded claims” made by Paul Ibe, the spokesperson to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, May 22, 2025, Ibe alleged that EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede held a secret meeting with an unnamed politician just 48 hours before the politician’s defection to the ruling All People’s Congress (APC).
The EFCC in a statement on Friday obtained by Dailyeconomy categorically rejects these allegations as fabricated and in poor taste.
The anti-graft agency noted that Olukoyede, known for his apolitical stance, has consistently emphasised the commission’s commitment to impartiality and non-partisanship.
The statement said, “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is outraged by the unfounded claims of Mr. Paul Ibe, spokesperson to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President, alleging that Ola Olukoyede, Executive Chairman, held a secret meeting with an unnamed politician.
“However, his (Paul Ibe) allegations of the Executive Chairman EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede and Solicitor General of the Federation’s alleged meeting with an unnamed governor forty -eight hours before his defection to the ruling All People’s Congress, APC, are patently fabricated and in bad taste.
“Olukoyede has stressed it at several fora that he is apolitical and the EFCC totally wired against partisan tendencies.”
The commission urges the public to disregard the baseless claims, describing them as purely imaginary and without any factual basis.
“The public is enjoined to disregard the alleged meeting with the unnamed Governor as it only exists in the imagination of Ibe,” it added.
