The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has fired back at Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, dismissing his allegations of political persecution as “baseless, unfounded, and misleading.”
In a statement, the anti-graft agency rejected Mohammed’s assertions that it was being weaponised by opponents, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, to target him and his officials.
The EFCC stressed its independence, declaring it a “non-partisan body mandated to investigate and prosecute economic and financial crimes without fear or favour.”
The commission labeled the governor’s portrayal of it as a political tool “mischievous and condemnable.”
It reminded the public that Mohammed himself faced money laundering charges as far back as 2016—before his election—questioning, “Who allegedly influenced the Commission to investigate and charge him in court?”
EFCC noted that the governor’s case was paused due to constitutional immunity but remains active, with his role as approving authority tying him to the allegations.
Charges against some Bauchi officials are already before a court, and the public is urged to review documents to see if they stem from “vendetta or thorough investigations.”
