The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has fired back at former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, dismissing his allegations of bail revocation over attending a political gathering in Kebbi State as “patently false.”

In a strongly worded statement obtained on Saturday, the anti-graft agency clarified that Malami remains on provisional administrative bail granted after his November 28 interrogation, but he has failed to meet any of its five conditions.

“Administrative bail is a discretionary temporary reprieve that allows a suspect to be released on stated conditions pending conclusion of investigation and arraignment in court,” the EFCC explained.

“He has neither met any of the requirements nor shown readiness to keep faith with them.”

The commission detailed a timeline of leniency toward Malami, who skipped a scheduled December 1 resumption for further questioning.

Instead, he submitted a letter on December 4 citing “ill-health,” prompting a compassionate deferral to December 4—despite no medical report provided.

When he still didn’t comply, the EFCC invited him again on December 8 and detained him until the bail terms are fulfilled.

EFCC debunked Malami’s claims point by point, calling it “ridiculous” to suggest the agency barred him from media interviews or political activities.

“The EFCC has no interest in the political affiliation of its suspects. It bears reiterating that the Commission is apolitical,” the statement emphasised, noting a recent arraignment of a former governor from the ruling party on contract fraud charges.

The agency urged Malami to focus on compliance: “The Commission wishes to advise Malami to expend his energy on meeting the five bail conditions he acknowledged and signed on November 28, 2025. It would also serve his interest to cooperate with his team of interrogators rather than dissipate energy in whipping up sentiments through false claims in the media.”

EFCC reiterated its non-partisan approach amid ongoing probes, though it declined further media engagement on the matter.
