Eguavoen denies stepping down as Eagles’ coach

The interim coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen, has firmly denied rumours of his resignation following a recent goal-less draw against Rwanda in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The speculation arose after Eguavoen’s post-match comments led some to believe he had stepped down from his position.
In a statement to the media upon returning to Abuja in the early hours of Wednesday, Eguavoen clarified that he remains in charge of the team and is committed to evaluating their performance with the Nigeria Football Federation.
He said, “It’s quite unfortunate that people just trigger something that is not correct. And the situation we are in now, we don’t need negative stories.
“I only talked about sitting down with the hierarchy of the federation after these two games and we will see how to go about prosecuting the next games.
He expressed worry over the misleading reports, emphasising, “Whatever people are reading out there is not correct, and I am still very much in charge.”
Despite the mixed results in the qualifiers, including a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic prior to the draw with Rwanda, Eguavoen stated that he was pleased with the players’ efforts and would continue to lead the team as they prepare for their next match against Libya in mid-October.
