In a major political shift, eight members of the House of Representatives from Kano State have defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), announcing their decision during Tuesday’s plenary at the National Assembly.
The lawmakers, representing key constituencies in Nigeria’s most populous northern state, made the surprise move amid heightened tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Their defection was publicly witnessed by high-profile figures, including Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, signalling strong APC backing.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas acknowledged the development on the floor, congratulating the defectors while wishing them success in their new political home.
The group cited “better alignment with national development goals” and the APC’s “inclusive platform” as reasons for the switch, according to a joint statement read during the session.
