As Nigeria marks Workers’ Day on May 1, President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio have extended heartfelt appreciation to the nation’s workforce, describing them as “the engine of our economy and the secret to our nation’s growth.”

In a statement celebrating workers across all sectors, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising their welfare.

“Our administration has and will continue to prioritise workers’ welfare. Together, we will make Nigeria great again,” he wrote.

He further saluted the contributions of every Nigerian-young and old, entrepreneur or employee, private or government-employed-whose efforts, he said, are vital to the development of homes, communities, and the nation at large, noting “Here’s to everyone, whose meaningful contributions help in no small way to the development of our homes, communities, and our dear Nation. Happy Worker’s Day, Nigeria.”

This year’s May Day comes amid economic challenges, with workers and labour leaders calling for improved wages and better working conditions, Dailyeconomy reports.

The Federal Government, meanwhile, has declared May 1 a public holiday, with Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo commending workers’ “diligence and sacrifice,” and urging continued unity and innovation to drive national progress.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also praised workers as “the backbone of our economy,” assuring that the National Assembly would continue to prioritise their welfare and rights.
