Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has released what he claims is concrete proof that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde received N50 billion from the Federal Government as intervention funds for the devastating January 2024 Bodija explosion in Ibadan, accusing him of diverting most of it to his presidential ambitions.
In a statement dated December 28, Fayose shared documents in response to Makinde’s public demand for evidence during a television appearance two days ago.
“Two days ago, I said on a national television that Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde got a sum of N50bn from the Federal Government as intervention on the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan,” Fayose wrote.
He emphasised that only N4.5 billion reached the victims, alleging the rest fueled Makinde’s political aspirations and PDP infighting.
Fayose, who served as Ekiti governor from 2003-2006 and 2014-2018, reluctantly went public with “official government documents” to counter what he called Makinde’s insincerity.
“Even though it is not in my character to go public with official government documents, I had to do this so that Nigerians will know who is saying the truth, and who has not been sincere with the people of Oyo State,” he stated.
The former governor tied the revelation to Makinde’s recent disclosures about private meetings with President Bola Tinubu.
“Most importantly, if as a governor, you have elected to go on national television to disclose part of what transpired in private meetings you had with the President, it becomes the duty of well-meaning Nigerians to give full disclosure,” Fayose added.
Escalating the feud, Fayose challenged Makinde to sue him in court and teased more revelations.
“I challenge Governor Seyi Makinde to sue me on this. Let me also tell him that there are proofs of other intervention funds received from Tinubu’s administration by the Oyo State Government, which the governor refused to disclose to the people,” he declared.
He also hinted at discrepancies in Oyo’s Internally Generated Revenue figures, signing off defiantly, “My name is still Ayo Fayose, I don’t say what I can’t prove.”
Makinde’s office has yet to respond to the allegations as of filing this report.
