FCT police deny allegation of killing protesters

Abdullateef Fowewe

The Federal Capital Police Command has denied the allegation of killing protesters in Abuja.

The FCT police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, in a post via its X (formally Twitter) account noted that the police operatives were not armed with lethal weapons. He stated that only anti-riot equipment was used.

The clarification post came following the circulation of a video claiming police involvement in the teenager’s death in the Kubwa area of Abuja.

He wrote, “Contrary to speculations, operatives of the FCT police command have conducted themselves civilly and professionally.

“I can honestly state that our officers did not kill any protesters. In fact, no lethal weapons were issued; only anti-riot equipment was provided.”

However, Dailyeconomy on Thursday, August 1 reported that the FCT Police Command denied the arrest of a photojournalist identified as Jide Oyekunle while covering the nationwide protest at Eagle Square in Abuja stating that the journalist was taken away from a dangerous environment for his safety after being advised to leave where he was standing and he refused.
