Election, INEC ballot box

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Mohammed Amupitan has summoned Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) and key officials for an emergency meeting over glaring logistical failures during Saturday’s FCT area council elections, zeroing in on Kuje and Kabusa.

It was gathered that Amupitan hauled in Returning Officers, Supervisory Presiding Officers, and collation centre staff from the troubled wards.

The probe targets delayed material deliveries, faulty Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines, and mismatches between voter turnout and accreditation data.

Amupitan voiced strong displeasure, ordering a “full internal investigation into the conduct of both ad hoc and permanent staff linked to the lapses.”

He issued a stern warning, “Any confirmed case of negligence, sabotage, or misconduct will attract disciplinary measures in line with the commission’s guidelines.”

The FCT REC offered reassurance to stakeholders, stating the investigation would be “transparent and concluded swiftly to prevent a recurrence in future elections.”

He added that, despite the hitches, “the polls across the FCT were largely peaceful and successful in five of the six area councils.”

Kuje Area Council results remain pending at the collation centre, with an official declaration imminent amid public outcry from voters and party agents over INEC’s preparedness.
