The Federal Government’s National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP) has delivered a major boost to the nation’s food security, adding over 2.5 million metric tons of key crops valued at ₦2.3 trillion in just three years.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, announced the milestone today, highlighting production surges in staple crops like wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, soybean, and cassava.
These gains have enhanced national food supply and helped stabilize prices amid economic pressures.
“Farmers’ productivity has strengthened nationwide, directly supporting price stability,” Abdullahi stated.
Looking ahead, the programme eyes further expansion through integration with the African Development Bank (AfDB)-funded Policy-Based Operations project.
Preparations are underway for a new Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) initiative targeting rice, maize, soybean, and cassava.
Meanwhile, NAGS 2.0 will prioritise wheat and rice starting in the 2026 wet season.
For the ongoing 2025/2026 dry season, efforts will ramp up rice, maize, and cassava production across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
This collaborative push between FG, AfDB, and JICA signals Nigeria’s commitment to self-sufficiency in agriculture.
