Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to safeguard Nigeria’s traditional institutions, emphasising their irreplaceable role in society.
Speaking on Friday at the 45th Anniversary celebration of the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Sani II, and the commissioning of Gumel Central Mosque in Jigawa State, Senator Shettima highlighted the enduring relevance of traditional rulers.
He said, “The tenure of every elective political office holder ends after eight years but the traditional institutions remain. Therefore, we must respect them, we must take care of them, and we must preserve as well as protect the institution.”
Describing traditional rulers as “the closest to the grassroots, the leaders and fathers of the society,” the Vice President reminded Nigerians that these institutions outlive every political administration.
He also congratulated the Emir of Gumel on his 45th anniversary in good health and prayed for longevity, saying, “May Almighty God spare the life of the traditional ruler to witness his Golden Jubilee and centenary celebrations.”
Reflecting on Gumel’s rich history, Shettima noted, “Gumel is home. Founded in 1750 by Danjuma… Our royal father, the 13th Emir of Gumel, is a graduate of Political Science and was a Commissioner in the cabinet of the late former governor, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, before ascending the throne.”
The Vice President paid tribute to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar III, describing him as “a leader worthy of emulation,” adding, “He is a symbol of our unity. Hardly a week passes without the Sultan building bridges across the country.”
He prayed for the Sultan’s continued health and long life.
Shettima also praised Jigawa State Governor Mallam Umar Namadi for his agricultural achievements, particularly the cultivation of 10,000 hectares of wheat, stating, “This is more than what the entire 18 northern states cultivated.”
Namadi expressed gratitude to the Vice President for attending the historic event and commended his dedication to Jigawa’s progress.
The Sultan of Sokoto used the occasion to preach unity, tolerance, and mutual respect across Nigeria’s religious and cultural divides, while commending VP Shettima for his efforts to preserve traditional institutions and foster peace.
Other dignitaries present included members of the Jigawa State Executive Council, the National Assembly, and traditional rulers from across the region.
