FG reaffirms commitment to fair representation amid criticism

The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to national unity and fair representation in federal appointments, addressing recent concerns about alleged lopsidedness in the composition of government positions.
In a statement released by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), and signed by the office’s Director, Information and Public Relations Segun Imohiosen, the administration categorically refuted claims of bias and emphasised its dedication to the principles of fairness, equity, and national unity.
The government stated that all appointments are made in strict adherence to the federal character principle, as enshrined in Section 14 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
The statement highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s strong belief in Nigerian unity, stating that he is “guided by the ideals of fairness and tenets of justice in all appointments”.
This approach aligns with the federal character principle, which aims to prevent the dominance of persons from a few states or ethnic groups in government positions.
However, the federal government urged the public to disregard unfounded speculations and rely on official government sources for accurate information.
Imohiosen in the statement underscored that the administration remains “steadfast in its pursuit of a prosperous, united and equitable Nigeria, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda”.
The statement also addressed those spreading divisive allegations, referring to them as “pokers of embers of hate and disunity” and advising Nigerians not to take such unfounded claims seriously.
This response comes amidst ongoing discussions about the implementation and effectiveness of the federal character principle in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The OSGF reminded the public that it is the official custodian of information regarding federal appointments and encouraged inquiries to be directed through their office.
