Residents, small business owners, and energy stakeholders gathered in large numbers at Abule-Egba and Iyana-Ipaja market on Tuesday as the Flip the Switch Campaign Roadshow delivered an immersive, community-driven push for clean energy adoption in Lagos.

Organised by African Climate Stories, the mobile roadshow transformed a busy transport hub into a live demonstration ground for solar innovation, offering real-time consultations, product showcases, and candid conversations about Nigeria’s persistent energy challenges.

From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the event drew a diverse cross-section of Lagosians; traders, artisans, transport workers, and households—many of whom currently rely on petrol and diesel generators. For many attendees, it was their first direct interaction with practical, affordable solar alternatives.

A Community-Centred Energy Conversation

At the heart of the roadshow was a simple but powerful idea: putting energy decision-making directly in the hands of everyday Nigerians.

Community champions shared personal stories of transitioning from generators to solar power, highlighting reduced fuel costs, quieter environments, and improved quality of life. Their testimonies resonated strongly with attendees, sparking curiosity and, in many cases, immediate interest in switching.

“I spend thousands weekly on fuel. If this solar option truly works as they’ve shown us today, it changes everything,” said Zubby, a local shop owner who participated in an on-the-spot consultation.

Live Demonstrations and Real-Time Solutions

Solar vendors and technical experts were on ground to demonstrate a range of renewable energy solutions tailored to different income levels and energy needs. Attendees engaged directly with providers, asking questions about installation, maintenance, and flexible payment options.

The consultations went beyond theory, with several households and small businesses initiating the process of adopting solar systems during the event.

Changing Behaviour Through Storytelling

A standout feature of the campaign is its storytelling approach. The roadshow forms part of a broader initiative that includes a forthcoming docu-reality TV series documenting real Lagosians as they transition to clean energy.

By combining lived experiences with practical demonstrations, the campaign aims to dismantle scepticism and build trust around renewable energy adoption.

“Our goal is not just awareness, but action,” said Nina Mbah, Co-founder of African Climate Stories and Project Lead for the campaign. “When people see others like them making the switch successfully, it becomes real and achievable.”

Economic and Environmental Imperatives

The roadshow also spotlighted the economic burden of generator dependence. With rising fuel prices and maintenance costs, many participants expressed frustration with the status quo.

Experts at the event outlined how solar solutions, particularly when paired with flexible financing, can significantly reduce long-term energy expenses.

Beyond cost savings, the environmental implications were clear. By encouraging a shift away from fossil fuel generators, the campaign is contributing to reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality in densely populated communities like Alimosho.

Part of a Larger Vision

The Flip the Switch Campaign is supported by ZE-Gen (Zero Emissions Generators) and the IKEA Foundation. It integrates community profiling, behavioural insights, and an innovative “Flip Scoreboard” designed to track renewable energy adoption across communities.

Tuesday’s roadshow marks a key milestone in what the organisers describe as the “design phase” of a multi-phase initiative with an ambitious goal: to inspire and track 10 million Nigerians transitioning to clean energy by 2030.

Momentum Building Across Lagos

As the roadshow concluded, there was a palpable sense of momentum. Conversations that began with curiosity evolved into concrete decisions, signalling a shift in how communities perceive and access energy.

For many attendees, the event was more than a demonstration—it was a glimpse into a more sustainable and economically viable future.

African Climate Stories confirmed that additional roadshows and community engagements are planned across Lagos and beyond in the coming months.
