The immediate past Super Eagle coach, Finidi George, has been unveiled as the new head coach of Rivers United Football Club.
The Rivers United Football Club exists under the Nigerian Premier Football League.
The development was revealed on the River United X (formally Twitter) account on Wednesday.
The post read, “Rivers United Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Finidi George as our new Technical Manager.
Finidi brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our team, having had a distinguished playing career spanning over fifteen years.
“His impressive credentials include winning the Africa Cup of Nations with the Super Eagles in 1994, the UEFA Champions League with Ajax in 1995, and the Nigeria Premier Football League with Enyimba International FC in 2023.”
However, the General Manager of Rivers United FC, Dr Okey Kpalukwu, welcomed Finidi and noted that he’s committed to working with him to achieve success for the team.
The GM said, “We are delighted to have Finidi George join our team. His appointment marks a new chapter in our club’s history, and we are committed to working together to achieve success.”
Finidi according to the statement, also expressed his gratitude to the club, saying, “I am honoured to have this opportunity, and I thank the Sports Commissioner, the General Manager, and the supporters for their confidence in me. I am committed to working hard and making the team win.”
After two games in charge, Finidi resigned as the head coach of the Super Eagles on June 15.
His decision came after the team’s disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic, leading the Nigeria Football Federation to bring in a foreign technical adviser for the team.
