The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has reported a significant drop in electricity generation on the national grid following industrial action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

NISO stated that the action disrupted gas supply to power plants, leading to widespread shortages and a sharp decline in available generation capacity.

“Recent major generation shortfalls on the national grid were caused by industrial action of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) within the gas supply chain,” the system operator stated.

Data released by NISO shows that available generation plunged from over 4,300 megawatts (MW) to as low as 3,200 MW at the peak of the disruption.

The operator assured the public that efforts are ongoing to restore stability, as engagements with stakeholders continue to resolve the situation.
