Hansi Flick defends Barcelona’s high line

Barcelona manager, Hansi Flick has pushed back against criticism of his team’s high defensive line, insisting that success hinges on pressing intensity rather than positioning or personnel.
“People always say: The high line, the line! But it’s not that,” Flick stated. “It does not matter how high we play, nor the players in the backline. It matters how we press. If we press well, the high line works. If not, we can get hit in behind easily.”
Flick’s comments address tactical vulnerabilities exposed in recent matches, emphasising that effective team pressing is the key enabler for Barcelona’s aggressive defensive setup.
The philosophy echoes Flick’s triumphant 2020 season with Bayern Munich, where his high-intensity “Mia San Mia” pressing system powered a treble while minimising counter-attack threats.
