Guard Time Information (GTI) Human Rights Activists Nationwide has issued a fiery press statement condemning a reported threat to the life of Labour Party leader Peter Obi in Edo State, urging the Inspector General of Police to launch a swift investigation.

The non-partisan group, dedicated to upholding democratic values and Nigerians’ fundamental rights, in a statement described the incident as “a serious danger to our democracy and national peace.”

“We therefore call on the newly appointed Inspector General of Police of the Nigeria Police Force to immediately deploy intelligence units to thoroughly investigate the alleged threat and ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice without delay,” the statement reads.

GTI emphasised that “Nigeria’s democracy must not be reduced to a battlefield of intimidation, harassment, or violence,” calling on political parties to prioritise “healthy competition, issue-based campaigns, and respect for opposing views not hostility or personal attacks.”

The activists warned that political rivalry “should never translate into threats to life or acts capable of destabilizing our nation,” insisting that “anyone found guilty, regardless of status or political affiliation, must face the full weight of the law.”

In a rallying call delivered in Abuja by Chairman Bibi Oduku, alongside legal practitioners and fellow activists, GTI asserted “Nigeria belongs to all of us. Let us safeguard it together.”

The group urged security agencies to act “swiftly and professionally to reassure Nigerians that their safety and democratic rights remain protected.”
