The former Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo has come to the defence of fellow Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, amid ongoing criticism regarding his recent transfer saga.

Ighalo in a heartfelt statement on his X (formally Twitter) account on Sunday expressed sadness over the negative comments directed at Osimhen, emphasising that the young player is only human and deserves understanding during this challenging time.

Ighalo urged Nigerians not to throw Osimhen under the bus by shading him, highlighting the pressures athletes face in the spotlight.

He acknowledged the emotional toll that such scrutiny can take, stating that he felt pain for him as he navigated the complexities of his career decisions.

He wrote, “No human being is perfect and we have all made mistakes in life, but seeing comments about this young man from his own country people makes me really sad, without even knowing what happened.

“I spoke to him and I could feel the pain in his voice, the way he’s been treated, this young man plays with heart and pain for his country, Hmmm it’s well, he will definitely be back stronger, we learn every day in life, Happy New Month to y’all.”

This support comes as Osimhen’s future with Napoli remains uncertain, with coach Antonio Conte confirming that the striker will not be reintegrated into the squad for the upcoming season. As speculation continues about Osimhen’s next move, including potential opportunities in the Saudi Pro League.

Dailyeconomy on August 31 reported that Napoli has officially excluded Osimhen from their Serie A squad list for the 2024/25 season.
