In June 2025, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 123.4, marking a 2.0-point increase from May’s 121.4. Despite this rise in the index, the headline inflation rate eased to 22.22% in June from 22.97% in May, representing a 0.75 percentage point decline, National Bureau of Statistics revealed in its latest report.
On a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate dropped significantly by 11.97 percentage points compared to June 2024’s rate of 34.19%.
This notable decrease highlights that inflation has moderated over the past year, although the base year changed to November 2009 = 100.
However, month-on-month figures reveal a slight acceleration in inflationary pressure, with the headline inflation rate increasing to 1.68% in June from 1.53% in May — a 0.15 percentage point uptick.
This suggests that “in June 2025, the rate of increase in the average price level was higher than the rate of increase in the average price level in May 2025,” indicating a short-term rise in consumer prices.
“On a year-on-year basis, the Headline inflation rate was 11.97% lower than the rate recorded in June 2024 (34.19%). This shows that the Headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) decreased in June 2025 compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., June 2024), though with a different base year, November 2009 = 100.
“On a month-on-month basis, the Headline inflation rate in June 2025 was 1.68%, which was 0.15% higher than the rate recorded in May 2025 (1.53%). This means that in June 2025, the rate of increase in the average price level was higher than the rate of increase in the average price level in May 2025,” the reports reads in part.
