The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has urged Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to “refrain from politicising the challenges of insecurity and instead focus on addressing the numerous problems bedevilling the state under his watch.”
In a statement on Saturday by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau responded to claims by the Kano State government that his comments could undermine ongoing security efforts.
He described these allegations as “false, reckless and malicious” and challenged the government to “produce the clip in which the Deputy President of the Senate made any statement that could undermine security efforts.”
Senator Barau emphasised the need for collective collaboration, saying, “The country’s insecurity challenges, including the incursion of part of the state by marauding bandits, needed the collaboration and support of all stakeholders to address these challenges.”
He also took a swipe at the current administration’s governance, stating, “Until governance was relegated to the background, our beloved state, Kano, used to be a very close second to Lagos in terms of prosperity, but unfortunately, misgovernance has eroded this.”
Highlighting his contributions to security, Senator Barau shared that he has provided operational vehicles, motorcycles, and renovated police infrastructure within his senatorial district.
He also facilitated the establishment of training colleges for NSCDC, Police Service, and Immigration Service and installed solar-powered streetlights to improve nighttime patrols.
He concluded by advising the state government to learn from his security initiatives rather than casting aspersions on his personality: “The state government should emulate him and not cast aspersions on his personality.”
