Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore announced on Friday that he met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the ongoing detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore revealed on X that Jonathan “agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly.”

Jonathan also promised to engage with the current authorities on the issue promptly.

Sowore stated, “I thank him sincerely for recognising the importance of resolving Kanu’s case in the interest of peace, fairness, and national healing.”

He pointed out that Jonathan “promised to meet @officialabat to discuss this issue as soon as possible.”

This development places former President Jonathan among notable Nigerians calling for justice, joining figures like ex Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana SAN, and Senator Shehu Sani.

Sowore emphasised that “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention today because he took up the just cause of confronting the long-standing issue of marginalization in Nigeria.”

He urged for Kanu’s release, noting, “Like other ethnic and regional activists whose politically motivated cases have been withdrawn or dismissed, Nnamdi Kanu should also be released without further delay.”

Sowore called on leaders across Nigeria, especially from the South East, to “lend their voices to the call for justice and freedom” and reaffirmed his commitment “to peacefully mobilizing for justice and freedom in this matter.”
