Afrobeat icon Seun Kuti has unleashed a rebuke against Wizkid’s devoted fanbase, Wizkid FC, for daring to compare the superstar to his legendary father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Seun dismissed the notion of Wizkid as “the new Fela,” calling it a blatant insult to his father’s revolutionary legacy.
“Wizkid FC needs to keep Fela’s name out of their mouth,” Seun said, emphasising that such claims disrespect Fela’s profound activism, musical innovation, and societal contributions.
The controversy erupted as fans hailed Wizkid’s global triumphs—including hit collaborations with Drake and Beyoncé, plus his vocal support for the 2020 #EndSARS protests—as proof of a modern Afrobeat throne.
Yet Wizkid FC fired back, insisting the comparisons aren’t mainstream and that Wizkid has forged his own path in Afrobeats.
This clash has sparked fresh debates in Nigeria’s music circles, pitting Fela’s protest-fueled Afrobeat revolution against Wizkid’s commercial global dominance.
