The Kwara State Government has launched a strict enforcement campaign targeting noise pollution, sealing six facilities in the metropolis for failing to comply with regulations.

The Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Buge, emphasised the need to balance business activities and public comfort, stating, “We have been very diplomatic with business owners whose object of trade revolves around generating noise but we can no longer marry that with the discomfort it creates for members of the public, especially within residential areas.”

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Abubakar Ayinla, the Ministry revealed it receives numerous complaints daily about noise disturbances.

Ayinla warned, “Folding our arms may mean endorsement, so we have commenced the sealing of the relevant facilities where noise beyond those acceptable for normal human beings escape to the immediate vicinity.”

The Ministry urged businesses involved in noisy operations to either sound-proof their premises or adhere strictly to the noise level guidelines already communicated.

“Those who want to trade in noise should prepare well, sound-proof their facilities or stay within the stipulated guidelines,” he added.

The enforcement will continue until noise pollution is minimised to acceptable levels.

The Commissioner also appealed to the public and religious bodies to observe noise limits of 55 decibels during the day and 40 decibels at night, noting, “This is important for our health and general well-being.”
