The Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has ordered the closure of public toilet facilities at Marina Car Park, Lagos Island, due to the negative impact on the environment after public complaints.

The decision comes as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental hygiene and end open defecation by 2025.

This was disclosed in a post on social media shared by the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab on Friday.

Wahaba stated that the toilets were found unclean and were discharging wastewater from the toilets onto the roads and car park environment which posed a significant environmental hazard to pedestrians and motor users.

The statement reads, “On Friday, 6th September 2024, the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) sealed off public toilets at Marina Car Park, Lagos Island, for severe environmental violations after a public complaint.

“The toilets were discharging wastewater from the toilets onto the roads and car park environment thus posing a significant environmental hazard to pedestrians and motor users. The toilets were also found with extremely unsanitary and unhygienic conditions.

“This action reflects the Lagos State Government’s zero tolerance to environmental pollution in all forms.

“Residents of the State are enjoined to maintain a cleaner, healthier and safer environment.”

Dailyeconomy on Thursday, September 5, reported that the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has sealed several organisations in the Alausa Ikeja, Ogba, Surulere, Sabo Yaba, Ebute Metta, and Shomolu areas of the State over noise and other environmental violations.
