Lagos State Police has issued a stern warning against unapproved cultural festivities, specifically the upcoming Egungun festival initially scheduled for November 27th and 28th.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the command emphasised its commitment to maintaining peace and security.

“The Lagos Police stops unapproved Egungun festival plans, and issues strong warning against individuals and groups not to engage in breaches of peace,” the statement said.

The police further declared that the festival cannot proceed due to fears it could disturb public order and safety.

The police also announced the arrest of twelve suspects linked to the circulation of intimidating posters and handbills on social media, attributed to “Oje Parapo of Oregun.”

Part of the police statement reads, “The publication from this group was warning and restricting the general public from freedom of movement, expression, and dignity.”

The Lagos Police reaffirmed their resolve to protect the fundamental human rights of all residents and visitors, urging anyone planning unauthorised gatherings to desist immediately.

The police reassured the public: “Members of the public are advised to go about their lawful duties without any fear or apprehension,” and advised reporting suspicious activities via emergency lines.

The police emphasised that “no festival that can risk destabilising the peace or heightening tension in the State will be permitted under any circumstances,” with the Commissioner of Police stating outright that the Egungun festival should not take place because “the security for the festival can no longer be guaranteed.”
