Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has elevated 14 high chiefs, including the controversial Oloja of Ago-Oja, Ganiyu Busari, to full crown-wearing Obas, handing them instruments of office in a vibrant ceremony attended by dignitaries in traditional regalia.

The event, captured in widely shared videos, featured speeches, honours, and applause as the new Obas received their symbols of authority.

This move revives the Alago-Oja title—twice declared non-existent by courts in 2007 and 2017—despite a January 30 Supreme Court motion from the Alaafin of Oyo urging a halt over alleged illegality.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Makinde, Deputy Governor Barrister Adebayo Lawal emphasised the administration’s intent stressing, “The elevation of the chiefs underscores the administration’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions and promoting peace and development at the grassroots.”

The state commissioner for local government defended the action, insisting it complies fully with the Oyo Obas and Chiefs Law, amid critics’ cries of executive overreach.
