Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has praised Chief Olabode George, the Atona Oodua of Yorubaland, as a major influence in Nigerian politics and credited him for shaping his own political journey.

Speaking at Chief George’s 80th birthday celebration in Lagos on Friday, Makinde recalled how George stood by him in 2014 when federal authorities attempted to block his governorship declaration.

Makinde said, “Sometimes in 2014, I nursed the ambition of becoming the governor of Oyo State. Some people within the party tried to frustrate our plan. I ran to Baba (George). He called everybody, and on the eve of that declaration, they restored the approval. We did the public declaration, and that was the beginning of that journey.”

Describing Chief George as “a resilient leader who has overcome numerous challenges to emerge stronger,” Makinde added, “A lot of people know that Baba was in the military, and if you go through that crucible, up to becoming a General in the military, you can never be a pushover.”

He also urged others to draw inspiration from George’s life during difficult times: “If you are going through trials, tribulations, rough patches, know that God did not promise that we are going to have a smooth journey. God will take all of us to our destination safely.”

The event attracted prominent figures including the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, top businessmen, and other dignitaries.
