Man attempts suicide on Third Mainland Bridge over life challenges

A man who preferred to be identified as Yemi has been rescued from committing suicide on Third Mainland Bridge by the Rapid Response Squad operatives of Lagos State Police Command.

Yemi, 59, who is a resident of Ilasa in Lagos State was said to have attempted suicide because he was overwhelmed by life challenges.

This was disclosed in a statement shared on the social media handle of the Lagos State Police Command on Friday.

The statement reads, “At about 1200hrs today (Friday), Rapid Response Squad (RRS) bike riders on routine patrol on the Third Mainland Bridge prevented a man from jumping into the lagoon.

“The man, one Yemi, aged 59 of Ilasa, Lagos stated that he was overwhelmed by challenges.

“Commander RRS, CSP Shola Jejeloye has counselled the suspect and has directed he be kept in protective custody pending the arrival of his family members.”

Dailyeconomy on July 5, 2023, reported that Abuja Police Command apprehended a man identified as Shuaibu Yushau who climbed an extremely high broadcast mast owned by Aso Radio in Katampe, Abuja, with a placard to commit suicide.

However, the FCT Police Command later stated that the Yushau would be charged to court if found mentally stable after a mental test.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, Dailyeconomy reported that the Delta State Police Command’s spokesperson, Edafe Bright claimed that anyone who attempts suicide risks a year jail term.
