Manchester United has officially announced plans to leave Old Trafford and construct a new 100,000-seat stadium adjacent to the current ground.
The new stadium, set to be the largest in the UK, is part of a broader regeneration project for the Old Trafford area, which could also include 17,000 new homes.
The club has called the new build “the world’s greatest football stadium” and hopes it will be completed within five years.
According to the architectural firm Foster and Partners, the new stadium will feature an umbrella-like design to harvest solar energy and rainwater.
The intention is to create an iconic football stadium that preserves the essence of Old Trafford while providing a state-of-the-art fan experience.
According to Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, “By building next to the existing site, we will be able to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while creating a truly state-of-the-art stadium that transforms the fan experience only footsteps from our historic home.”
The club believes the project could add an additional £7.3 billion per year to the UK economy from an additional 1.8 million visitors annually.
However, questions remain on how the club will finance the new stadium, which is estimated to cost £2 billion.
