The Nasrul-Lahi-L-Fatih Society (NASFAT) has marked Workers’ Day by celebrating the resilience and contributions of Nigerian workers, while calling on the government to prioritise fair treatment and improved welfare for all members of the workforce.
In a statement shared with our correspondent on Thursday by NASFAT President, AbdulWahid AbdulRauf, the organisation praised the “grit and resilience of Nigerian workers and their families,” underlining that the nation’s progress has been built on their dedication and sacrifice.
“The strongest middle class the world has ever known was not built overnight. It was forged by men and women who believed that fulfilling the promise of Nigeria meant more than mere optimism-it required labouring by day, working through the night, and proving that their future was worth fighting for,” AbdulRauf stated.
He acknowledged the historical significance of Workers’ Day in Nigeria, highlighting the achievements of past labour movements in securing fundamental rights such as minimum wage, overtime pay, and collective bargaining.
NASFAT also addressed the current economic challenges, urging the government to demonstrate “empathetic, responsible political leadership that truly seeks to improve the lives of the people.”
The statement called for policies that guarantee fair compensation, strengthen retirement security, and promote inclusive workplaces.
“We must continue working towards pay equity, support the right to unionise, and remove barriers that prevent people from succeeding simply because of who they are. In doing so, we move closer to a fair and globally competitive economy for all Nigerian workers,” AbdulRauf underscored.
The message concluded with a reaffirmation of unity and hope, encouraging collective resolve to achieve greater heights for all workers and their families.
This year’s Workers’ Day was officially declared a public holiday by the Federal Government, with the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, commending workers for their “diligence and sacrifice,” and urging a culture of innovation and productivity to drive national growth, Dailyeconomy reports.
