NBA Epe Branch demands immediate probe, prosecution over extra-judicial killings by Elemoro Police officers

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Epe Branch, has called for the urgent investigation and prosecution of police officers involved in the extra-judicial killings that occurred at Elemoro Police Station, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
A strongly worded press statement by the NBA Epe Branch Chairman Dr. S. O. Jimoh and Vice Chairman Ivo Takor, mni, condemned the unlawful killing of two commercial motorcyclists (“Okada riders”) and the serious injury of another at Onosa Junction on Thursday, 28th August 2025. The killings, described as barbaric and illegal, were carried out by officers attached to the Elemoro Police Station in an unprovoked attack on innocent citizens.
The NBA stressed that these actions represent a blatant violation of Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which guarantees the right to life and prohibits arbitrary deprivation of life.
Following the killings, widespread protests erupted among community members and commercial motorcyclists on Friday, 29th August 2025. The unrest was only quelled after soldiers intervened with professionalism and restraint, preventing further bloodshed.
The NBA’s Human Rights Committee investigations further revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse of power by officers at Elemoro Police Station. The police reportedly seize motorcycles from riders arbitrarily, only releasing them upon payment of illegal fees ranging from N150,000 to N300,000, amounts described as extortion and economic sabotage disguised as law enforcement.
The association also expressed grave concern about the routine illegal roadblocks mounted by Elemoro officers along the expressway, even near the Area J Command, Ibeju-Lekki. These roadblocks reportedly involve the use of logs to obstruct traffic and serve as tools for daily harassment and extortion of law-abiding citizens.
In response, the NBA Epe Branch made several urgent demands, including:
Immediate investigation and prosecution of all officers involved in the killings of 28th August 2025.
The establishment of an independent judicial panel of inquiry into the unlawful operations of the Elemoro Police Station.
The removal of all illegal roadblocks within the jurisdiction of Elemoro Police Station.
A directive from the Inspector General of Police to halt all harassment, extortion, and abuse of power by officers of the Elemoro Police Station
Adequate compensation and support for the families of the deceased and the injured victim.
The NBA Epe Branch pledged to pursue justice to its logical conclusion, committing all necessary legal resources to ensure accountability and the protection of victims’ rights.
“We will not stand idly by while agents of the state desecrate the Constitution, terrorize law-abiding citizens, and trample upon the rule of law with impunity,” the statement warned, underscoring the urgent need for accountability.
