NCC orders Telcos on tariff transparent

The Nigerian Communications Commission has ordered telecommunications operators to communicate relevant information about their tariff plans.

The move according to the statement on Monday by the NCC Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, aims to provide clear and accurate information about the name of the plan, price, validity period, price-per-second for on or off-network and international calls, expected data speeds, and fair usage policies.

The NCC in the statement, instructed telecommunications companies to continue offering their current bonus-driven tariff plans until December 31, 2024. During this time, operators are required to inform and transition all customers to the new simplified tariff plans.

The statement said, “The guidelines further mandate that MNOs must communicate tariffs to subscribers in ‘clear language and a user-friendly format,’ with full disclosure of a subscriber’s tariff plan via USSD.

“Additionally, operators must offer stand-alone data bundles at fair prices to avoid tying consumers with products they do not need; bonuses on promotions must be stated in actual value; access fees and asymmetric fee structures must be eliminated, among other conditions.”

The NCC in the remark emphasised that operators must also meet the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) standards set out in the Quality of Service (QoS) Regulations while complying with the guidelines.

Meanwhile, NCC refuted the reports claiming that it has approved an increase in the telecos tariff plans, as reported on Saturday, August 3, by Dailyeconomy.
