The Nigeria Data Protection Commission in its mission to secure public data has offered training on data privacy for the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre staff to strengthen collaboration.
This was made known in a statement on Wednesday shared on the social media handle of NDPC.
The National Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer of NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, made the offer when he led a delegation from the Commission on an advocacy visit to the Director of the NPF-NCCC, Commissioner of Police, Uche Ifeanyi Henry, at the National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja.
In the statement, Olatunji noted that the work of data protection and cybercrime detection and prevention are closely aligned, underscoring the shared objectives between the NDPC and NCCC.
The statement reads in part, “Dr Olatunji highlighted the importance of safeguarding personal data and the consequences of failing to implement protective measures.
“He elaborated on data subjects’ rights and the principles of data protection, particularly emphasising the lawful basis for processing personal data during investigations.
”Dr Olatunji proposed several areas of collaboration, including capacity building, research and development, data breach and cybercrime investigation strategies, and compliance measures. Additionally, Dr Olatunji offered training on data privacy for NCCC Staff.”
In response, CP Henry thanked the National Commissioner for the visit and acknowledged the significance of collaboration between the NDPC and NCCC, particularly as personal data is often involved in successful cybercrimes.
“The CP emphasised the need for collective efforts among agencies to address issues related to data breaches and cybersecurity. CP Henry also underscored the importance of capacity building, offering the expertise of NCCC staff to train NDPC personnel in cybersecurity to ensure the personal data of Nigerians is adequately protected.
“He discussed other areas of collaboration during the meeting. CP Henry delivered a presentation on the NPF-NCCC’s initiatives.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was proposed to further strengthen collaboration between the NDPC and NCCC, and a task team was created to begin work on the collaboration process immediately,” the statement stated.
