The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has kicked off a key Management Retreat on Wednesday, focusing on reviewing last year’s performance and mapping out strategies for improved disaster preparedness and service delivery across Nigeria.

The two-day gathering brings together senior and middle-level managers to evaluate achievements, tackle challenges, and align on a results-oriented path forward.

It aligns with NEMA’s mandate to enhance nationwide response coordination amid rising disaster risks.

Speaking at the opening, NEMA Director General Zubaida Umar highlighted the retreat’s goals, “The objective of the gathering is to critically review activities undertaken in the last operational year and develop actionable strategies for the current year.”

She stressed the need for proactive leadership, adding, “As disaster risks become increasingly complex and interconnected, NEMA must remain proactive, strategic, and cohesive in its operations,” while underscoring alignment in “planning, implementation, and performance management across all departments and operations offices.”

Umar also affirmed the agency’s dedication to “continuous improvement, accountability, and results-driven leadership.”

Dr Emenike Umesi, Director of Human Resource Management, noted the retreat’s structured approach, “The retreat is being guided by clearly defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure objective assessment of departmental outputs, promote efficiency, and maintain high standards in both operational and administrative functions.”
